Diane Lock
Therapeutic Arts Counsellor

Hi, I’m Diane Lock - a Therapeutic Arts Counsellor who works with children, adults and families.

Therapeutic art counselling is a proven approach to helping you understand and work with the challenges that we face in life. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression, low self esteem, fitting in or you just want to understand yourself more and work on a new direction or goal, working with me can help you.

I graduated from Tobias School of Art & Therapy in Sussex and I am a fully qualified Transpersonal Arts Counsellor. I have worked with schools, charitable organisations and with private clients. I am a member of BACP, holding public liability insurance and up to date DBS checks.

I have worked with young children, teenagers and adults. My approach is to help you look at your situation in a new way using therapeutic art counselling to see things from a different perspective, helping you to own your stories, both past and present. And then explore how to achieve the kind of future you want for yourself.

I also work with families helping them to understand and explain the impact of the past and the present on their everyday interactions. I use a visual family timeline to help clients understand their personal history and its impact on the present.

Useful Information

What is therapeutic arts counselling?

The overall aim of creative arts counselling is to effect change and promote personal growth.

Why use therapeutic arts counselling?

Therapeutic arts counselling is a process that focusses on self exploration in a safe and supportive environment. It can help both adults and children.

For children, drawing, painting, modelling and playing is a language without words and therefore very immediate and accessible.

For adults, it can help us to express the more difficult feelings and emotions that we can find difficult to put into words.

Who would benefit from therapeutic arts counselling?

Therapeutic arts counselling is for everyone of all ages who may be experiencing issues such as low self esteem, anger, anxiety, stress, trauma, chronic illness, cognitive impairment and grief. It is also for people who just want to explore themselves more and use a creative form of therapy to help them look at their lives and situations from a different perspective.

What happens in a therapy session?

Art therapy sessions are usually 50 minutes in length. No previous experience or skill in art is necessary. You will be encouraged to express and reflect on your situation and there are many mediums we can use to do this. These include drawing, sculpting, model making, photography and stories in a peaceful, therapeutic setting.

Do I have to be good at art or be artistic for this to be of benefit?

This is a proven approach to therapy where art, or the concept of art, is used as a different way to access whatever situation you are working with in your life. The ability to draw or be skilled in art is not required to get benefit from this approach. Successful therapy is about the conversation the art leads to, not the art itself.
